Rust Nation 2025: A Glimpse into the Future of Rust and It's Expanding Ecosystem
4th March, 2025 4 mins
Understanding Recruitment's Principal Account Manager Cedric Sellmann, and Head of Executive Search Sam Baker, recently attended Rust Nation in London, an event that continues to be a cornerstone for the Rust community. Held at the historic brewery in Farringdon, the venue provided the perfect setting for engaging in discussions, networking, and celebrating the evolution of Rust.
Reflections from Cedric:
Cedric, attending for the third time, shared his thoughts on this year’s event:
"This year marked my third time attending Rust Nation, and once again, it was an absolute pleasure. The brewery in Farringdon remains one of my favourite venues—steeped in history and always a fantastic space to connect. I just wish we could have a year where it doesn’t rain… then again, it is London."
"The lineup of talks was exceptional. I particularly enjoyed hearing from Celina Val, David Hewitt, Greg Johnston (Lead at Leptos), and Mark Russinovich—each delivering important insights in their own right. The event serves as a powerful reminder of just how far Rust has come."
"When I first started recruiting in Rust six years ago, it felt like a ghost town—driven by the sheer passion and determination of a dedicated few, I wasn’t sure whether it would lead anywhere. Fast forward to today, and it’s incredible to see just how much the ecosystem has flourished. Rust is no longer confined to 'just crypto'; its impact is spreading rapidly across traditional finance, robotics, embedded systems, healthcare, infrastructure, mobile, front-end web development, AI, and too many others to list. The growth is undeniable, and I can’t help but wonder where we’ll be in another three years."
"Finally, I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who stopped to say hi—it was a pleasure catching up, especially with all of those who flew over. Looking forward to doing it all again soon (hopefully before next year!)."
Key takeaways from Rust Nation 2025
One of the most anticipated sessions this year was Microsoft is Getting Rusty: A Review of Successes and Challenges, hosted by Mark Russinovich. With major players like Microsoft incorporating Rust into their technology stack, it’s clear that Rust is no longer just a niche language; it’s becoming a fundamental part of modern software development. The talk explored how Microsoft is leveraging Rust to enhance security and performance in critical systems, as well as the challenges they face integrating it into large-scale projects. It also shared valuable insights, lessons learned, and a look at what’s next as Microsoft continues to evolve with Rust.
Another standout was The Future of Rust Web Applications, which delved into the growing adoption of Rust for web development. The session highlighted frameworks like Leptos and Dioxus, which are nearing feature parity with JavaScript frameworks, allowing developers to build full web apps in Rust. While features like bundle splitting and lazy loading were previously lacking, they are now on the verge of being fully implemented. With Rust’s performance advantages and these advancements, the possibility of building end-to-end web applications in Rust is becoming a very realistic prospect.
A particularly engaging talk was Rust in Space! How Rust is Powering Next-Generation Space Mission Simulators. This explored Ephemerista, a next-generation, open-source space mission simulator funded by the European Space Agency. The talk showcased how Rust’s type system can be leveraged to model complex concepts like spacetime, making it accessible to developers without requiring a PhD. Rust's reliability and performance are proving to be essential for mission-critical applications, and the session highlighted how Rust is increasingly becoming a key player in the aerospace industry.
A highly practical session was Functional Programming for The Working Rustacean, which explored how functional programming principles can be applied in Rust. The talk broke down key concepts like immutability, higher-order functions, and pure functions, showing how Rust naturally supports these ideas while also identifying areas where it diverges. Through practical examples, the session addressed potential gaps, asking whether they’re real challenges or just theoretical concerns. The conclusion? A balanced approach to functional programming in Rust, leveraging the language’s strengths while keeping things pragmatic. Attendees left with actionable tips for writing more expressive and maintainable Rust code without compromising its unique advantages.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Rust and Its Growing Impact
Rust Nation 2025 continues to be a powerful reminder of how far the Rust ecosystem has come, highlighting the language's growing presence across industries, from finance and healthcare to space exploration and web development. With major players like Microsoft integrating Rust into their technology stack and advancements in web frameworks like Leptos and Dioxus, it’s clear that Rust is no longer a niche language but a cornerstone of modern software development. The event highlighted the ongoing evolution of Rust, offering valuable insights, practical takeaways, and a glimpse into what the future holds. As the Rust community continues to thrive, we can only look forward to what comes next, whether it’s advancements in functional programming, innovative applications in space, or further expansion into everyday development. We can’t wait to see what the next Rust Nation has in store!
